When one considers that the original LEGO Star Wars really kicked off the LEGO game franchise as we know it today, it’s understandable that developers TT Games want to go all out with the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s been revealed that one way this will be accomplished is by including additional story content in the game that wasn’t featured in the Force Awakens film.
This additional story content in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will take the form of special missions that must be unlocked by collecting gold bricks. Traveller’s Tales is labeling these missions as “bridge content,” which is meant to fill in the story gap that currently exists between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
While TT Games is mostly keeping its cards close to its chest at this point, two examples have been given so far. For one, those that play LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will discover how C-3PO obtained the red arm that he has in the film. This event will be true to canon, though some non-canon elements, such as the various sight gags common in cut-scenes for the LEGO franchise, will be included as well.
Another way that TT is expanding on the backstory of The Force Awakens and its characters has to deal with the exploits of Chewbacca and Han Solo before the events of the film. As moviegoers will recall, Chewbacca and Solo bring protagonists Finn and Rey aboard their new freighter ship, where they happen to be housing dangerous tentacle creatures called Rathtars. One of the bonus missions in The Force Awakens will be all about how Han and Chewy captured those creatures.
Having a chance to expand on the official Star Wars canon is a rarity, especially with Disney now keeping a watchful eye on proceedings. Traveller’s Tales understands the rather remarkable opportunity it has been given, with head designer Mike Taylor having this to say on the matter:
“It’s fantastic to be able to look at all these fantastic new characters from The Force Awakens and speak to Lucasfilm about how we can sort of look into their backstory and how they’ve been led to the events of The Force Awakens. I still struggle to believe that it’s actually possible to do that.”
By having new story content that wasn’t seen in the feature film, it puts LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a position to be an even bigger success than most LEGO games. LEGO Jurassic World was the best-selling game of July 2015, but considering the immense popularity of the Star Wars brand combined with the new story content, it’s safe to say that LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens could potentially be the best-selling game in the franchise to date.
The new story content will also give LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens a bit more significance over other Star Wars games on the market. For example, Star Wars Battlefront won’t have any more Force Awakens content, because the Battlefront franchise is set during the Original Trilogy. This arguably makes LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens a more important release than Battlefront for the Star Wars saga.
Ever since the initial LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens leak and the subsequent official trailer, fans have been buzzing about the game. Now that they know to expect brand new story information that will help answer some of the questions raised by the film, it’s likely that their anticipation for LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens has increased even more. Here’s hoping that TT Games and Warner Bros. are able to deliver a game that lives up to the hype.
LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available on June 28th for PC,
