ARK: Survival Evolved Developer Talks PS4 Version

Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczak discusses the PS4 version ARK: Survival Evolved, explaining that the Xbox early access mode will help Sony players in the long run.

ARK: Survival Evolved has proved to be a surprise hit for both PC and the Xbox One. The dinosaur-hunting title, which is still only in its early access stage, has managed to accumulate a strong player following since its launch. Now, developer Studio Wildcard is discussing the potential of a PS4 version of the game.

Speaking with GameSpot, Studio Wilcard creative director and co-founder Jesse Rapczak talked directly about the PS4 version of ARK: Survival Evolved. Although information on a port of the game for Sony’s console has been thin on the ground, Rapczak explained that the team was “pretty excited about PS4.” However, because of the Sony console’s lack of an early access program, ARK: Survival Evolved will likely not be making its way to the PS4 until it’s in a finished state.

Not to be discouraged, however, Rapczak believes that “Sony players will benefit greatly from the Xbox early access.” The feedback that Studio Wildcard is receiving on the Microsoft version of the game is going to be used to improve the PS4 version before its eventual release. In the meantime, the creative director encourages any PS4 fans to contact Sony and request that an early access program is created for the console, so those interested in the project have a chance to shape its final version.

Rapczak was also able to provide plenty of other updates for the development of ARK: Survival Evolved. Studio Wildcard is apparently planning to bring in widespread Virtual Reality support for the title, with Oculus support in place and plans to allow PlayStation VR use for the PS4 version. Meanwhile, the studio also has some “fun stuff” lined up for Valentine’s Day, with other events planned in the future.

The creative director also divulged the studio’s reason for allowing split-screen play in the game. Rapczak stated that split-screen was included to ensure that players do not have to “go into another room” in order to play together. It’s a move that was positively received in general, particularly by those who miss the ailing game mode.

However, much of ARK: Survival Evolved’s future is up in the air. Although the game has proved to be hugely popular so far, with millions of players signing up to play the title, there are a number of issues that still need to be addressed, including problems with the game’s frame rate. Those who have picked up the game thus far will hope that the title’s promise turns into a stellar finished product.
