Dying Light Video Shows the Evolution of the Zombie

Developer Techland releases a new video to promote Dying Light‘s The Following DLC, showing how the concept of zombies has evolved throughout the years.

Be it with recent films like Maggie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, television shows like Fear the Walking Dead, books such as Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and video games including Call of Duty: Black Ops 3′s Zombies mode as well as Left 4 Dead, it’s safe to say that the pop culture landscape is practically littered with the undead. Interestingly enough, developer Techland decided to take fans of the phenomenon through a history lesson of sorts, by showing how zombies have evolved over the past several decades in a promotional video for Dying Light‘s The Following DLC.

Techland’s clip not only encompasses examples of zombies in film and television such as the creatures from George A. Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead and the rage-induced zombies from Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, but it also features an iteration of the T-Virus tainted monsters from Resident Evil and its remakes. Of course, the footage wouldn’t have been complete if the developer left out its own creations, as it ends with a look at a live-action version of Dying Light‘s the Volatile.

Obviously, the time-lapse video seen below can only fit in so many zombie references, as there have been an innumerable amount since their inception into popular culture, so plenty have been left out of the clip. However, fans of practical movie make-up effects should definitely give it a watch, for the artists do a fantastic job using a single model to bring to life, or rather, reanimate a lot of famous versions of the creature.

This isn’t the first time that Techland has had some fun and been creative with its marketing materials.  As it happens, several months ago, shortly after Bungie announced it was teaming up with the energy drink Red Bull, the Dying Light developer made a Destiny parody promo with the studio announcing its own partnership with Water.

Speaking of advertising, Techland has definitely been doing its best to publicize the forthcoming Following DLC for Dying Light. Prior to today’s “100 Years of Zombie Evolution in Pop Culture” feature, the developer has provided details regarding the expansion’s elements, including a trailer exploring the add-on’s hefty map size, its new three-tiered bounty system, its vehicle customization, as well as its new Nightmare difficulty mode.

Considering the amount of work Techland has put into promoting the forthcoming DLC, the studio is undoubtedly looking to build upon the success of Dying Light‘s base game — with more than 3.2 million units moved, sales set a record to make it the developer’s most popular title — and introduce more gamers to the release with The Following and its Enhanced Edition. Bearing all of this in mind, die-hard Dying Light fans and newcomers alike will probably be pleased with the final product.

Dying Light‘s The Following DLC and the Enhanced Edition are set to release next week on February 9, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
