Obsidian Dev Wants to Work on Another Fallout Game

An Obsidian Entertainment developer expresses interest in the possibility of working on another entry in the Fallout franchise sometime in the future.

While answering fan questions on Twitter, Eric Fenstermaker, creative lead on Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity and South Park: The Stick of Truth, said that he and his team would love nothing more than to work on another Fallout release, proclaiming the series to be a “really fun property to work with.” While the prospect of Obsidian putting together another Fallout game is exciting to say the least, it’s important to note that at this point in time, no actual plans are in the works for the studio to move forward with development on a sequel for the post-apocalyptic franchise.

As most gamers are aware, Obsidian Entertainment’s last foray into the Wasteland was with the superb New Vegas, of which many fans consider to be a superior entry over the previous installment in the franchise – that is, the Bethesda-developed Fallout 3. Truthfully, with so many people expanding upon Obsidian’s take on the action-RPG with mods, be it the unofficial DLC known as Autumn Leaves or the massive undertaking of Project Brazil, it’s obvious that folks are huge fans of New Vegas and want more.

Interestingly enough, Fenstermaker’s tweet seen below echoes sentiments both his studio and Bethesda have made in the past. As it happens, a few years back, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart said he wants New Vegas 2 to get made, with Bethesda’s Todd Howard – director of Fallout 4 – supporting the statement.

While it would be downright delightful if Obsidian got its hands dirty with the Fallout franchise again, it’s surprising the company would want to partake in creating another one considering the fact that developers lost out on extra money after not hitting a targeted Metacritic game reviews score. However, Obsidian was well aware the aforementioned bonus was not guaranteed, but even so, the contract struck with Bethesda still remains to be somewhat unethical.

Taking everything into consideration, though, it’ll more than likely be quite some time before we see another sequel make its way into the Fallout canon from Obsidian or any studio for that matter. After all, Bethesda would have to offer up a license deal for outside companies to work on the title, and so far the Maryland-based publisher and developer have yet to even complete Fallout 4‘s Season Pass and DLC. Nevertheless, if Obsidian ever gets another crack at the series, we’ll surely be in for another great game.

What do you think about Obsidian Entertainment possibly creating another Fallout game? Should the studio obtain licensing rights, where do you believe its developers should set the next title? Chicago? New Orleans? Perhaps somewhere outside of the United States for once? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The most recent entry in the Fallout series is Fallout 4, which is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
