NieR: Automata is a game as strange as some of its designers, but both possess the kind of oddball charm that is more endearing than off-putting. What began as a quiet announcement during an event that saw much of the hype directed toward Final Fantasy 15, however, has quickly become many RPG fans choice for sleeper hit of 2017, as NieR: Automata has impressed both aesthetically and in its gameplay for months now.
While NieR: Automata is clearly a successor to its predecessor in the way it presents compelling, post-apocalyptic visuals, Platinum Games and Square Enix have refined the game’s combat, which many believed to be the downfall of the original NieR. PlayStation Underground has provided some more evidence that suggests NieR: Automata will be one of the games to watch of 2017, with a near half-hour video showcasing some of the game’s open world gameplay creating a buzz on social media today.
The video, shown above, features Android 2B navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape and battling with various other robots as she travels with her other android companions. The game looks compelling despite featuring a dreary landscape, and gamers also get a glimpse at what the world will look like outside of the androids, including a group of humans that have formed a resistance inside a run-down town. It’s not much more insight into the game’s story, but it is exciting, and it shows that for all of the innovations NieR: Automata is looking to make, it has preserved the original game’s feel.
The combat, as has become the norm in gameplay demonstrations of NieR: Automata, looks fluid and engaging, and is reminiscent of Final Fantasy 15 or Kingdom Hearts in the way it successfully blends action and RPG elements together. Whatever gamers see in the trailer is likely what they will experience themselves as well, as NieR: Automata has gone gold and new gameplay footage will almost certainly be featured in the final release at this point.
Whether or not RPG fans began 2017 excited about NieR: Automata, videos like the one produced by PlayStation Underground today have made a compelling case for Square Enix and Platinum Games’ follow-up as one of the most exciting releases in the near future. Fans will be able to decide for themselves whether or not NieR: Automata lives up to the hype soon, as the game is less than a month away from release.
NieR: Automata will release in North America on March 7, 2017 for PS4, with a PC released scheduled for sometime in 2017.
