Last week, NetherRealm Studios decided to give Injustice 2‘s next character reveal a date change, by pushing the debut of the game’s newest cast member back from last Tuesday until today. Now, thankfully, the developer has followed through on its promise by not only confirming the inclusion of Swamp Thing as a playable character for Injustice 2, but also giving fans a brief overview for some of the humanoid/plant elemental creature’s moves and abilities that can be used during combat.
As seen below in the trailer courtesy of IGN, Swamp Thing will definitely be no slouch when it comes to dishing out pain against his opponents in Injustice 2, as his massive frame and incredible strength allow him to deliver potent portions of damage to enemy combatants with just a few hits. Interestingly enough, NetherRealm Studios decided to initially pit Swamp Thing against Robin for his debut fighting segment, with the two trading a couple of lines of dialogue before the battle that mention Damian Wayne’s grandfather – that is, the Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul – and potentially allude to the greater machinations of the game’s story.
As evidenced in the Injustice 2 clip above, should Swamp Thing be able to get on a breakaway and pull off a plethora of combos, enemies will fall quickly to a powerful, yet versatile array of bruiser moves. As is to be expected in a fighting game trailer, the clip features a lot of Swamp Thing’s different abilities, including his power to be able to grow branches to push opposing fighters back , the capacity to duplicate himself to grab enemies and deal additional damage, the magical ability to sink into the ground to avoid attacks, as well as a finishing move that pulls foes into the earth under their feet for a punishing below-the-ground beat down.
For those unaware, prior to today’s reveal of Swamp Thing, the most recently unveiled character for Injustice 2‘s roster of heroes was Black Canary, with a gameplay trailer showing off her quick skills in combat, in addition to her signature Canary Cry, which sends a sonic scream at her opponent. On the villain side of things, the newest antagonists confirmed for the game have been Bane, Poison Ivy, and Brainiac.
With the release date for Injustice 2 still several months away, fans ought to expect for NetherRealm Studios to have many more character reveals planned in the near future, with the game’s creative director Ed Boon having previously teased the addition of even more obscure characters than those from the original title. Plus, Boon has intimated at the possibility of other fighters outside of the DC Universe coming to Injustice 2, with Sub-Zero and Spawn being two potential additions, so there’s definitely lots more information about the game to come.
Injustice 2 is set to release on May 16, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
