While most Fallout 4 players are likely already knee (or even elbow) deep in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic adventure, others are just getting started. Thanks to the holidays, some gamers likely received Fallout 4 as a gift from someone or maybe as a gift to themselves; perhaps they were even recommended the game by a friend. After all, Fallout 4 is one of the most talked about games of 2015.
So, for those players who are just starting out in Fallout 4, there are a few things to know going in. Obviously, a good handle on the VATS system will help in combat, provided the player doesn’t want to go the traditional FPS route, but there’s so much more to be aware of to be successful. And luckily, one Fallout 4 super fan has stepped forward to add a helping hand.
In a pretty substantial post on Reddit, this Fallout 4 fan, who goes by the username bpdhumanity, has compiled a bunch of essential tips for first time players. Granted, some of these may seem obvious to the seasoned Bethesda fan, but for those who are just now getting acquainted with the open world RPG developer, these tips will likely go a long way. Read the full list here.
Some highlights from the Fallout 4 tips include how to manage Settlements, a new feature added in Fallout 4. As bpdhumanity explains, there are many factors that can influence the ‘Happiness’ level of a Settlement, so make sure to manage those specific factors as often as possible. It’s true that Happiness is not essential, but those who want to get the full 1,000 Gamerscore or the Platinum trophy will need to max out at least one settlement’s ‘Happiness’.
The tips list also highlights the most useful starter perks in the game – i.e. those that will give players a slight edge in the game. Admittedly, there are tons of perks to choose from in Fallout 4, and each can suit a different play style. But for those who want to get a head start on an efficient playthrough, bpdhumanity recommends Scrapper, the first two tiers of Idiot Savant, Cap Collector, Local Leader, and at least one damage increase perk.
Overall, the Fallout 4 tips will only get players so far, but they will put them on good footing. From there, it’s up to the player to dive deeper into the game and begin to tailor the experience to their play style. Some may choose to go after all of the Power Armor in the game, and dominate from a place of strength, while others might choose to go a completely pacifist route, and not kill anything in the game.
That’s the beauty of Bethesda games: they afford a lot of freedom in how players can approach them. Still, we’d recommend looking over the aforementioned list before jumping in.
