Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Will Be 'Tonally Different'

A recent interview with the creative director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy reveals the game will stand out from the main series by being “tonally different”.

Those wondering what Uncharted: The Lost Legacy will be bringing to the series, outside of what’s been seen in the main installments, now have some insight into the answer. According to the creative director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Shaun Escayg, in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK, “It [will] be tonally different, but in the same context of the Uncharted world.”

PowerUpGaming reports that Escayg goes on to explain the game’s setting, which will be taking place in India, and why that works well for the series.

India’s got really nice iconography: hidden temples and weird deities we can play off of, so it’s a perfect setting for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

This gives a little more context to the announcement trailer that aired two months ago during the 2016 PlayStation Experience. The Lost Legacy removes frontman Nathan Drake and instead stars two of the series’ most badass women.

Players will take on the role of Chloe Frazer, who was inexplicably missing from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End despite being a fan favorite. It’s only proper she gets her time in the spotlight. She is joined by Ex-Shoreline leader Nadine Ross — who can be loosely referred to as a villain in the last installment — as they search for a treasure together in India.

The Lost Legacy director, Kurt Margenau, stressed a difference in gameplay from what people might expect if they played the main series, stating, “I would say we’re going a little more wide this time. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s something we’re excited about on the gameplay side, this kind of contrast of an urban setting and a rural setting; a tighter experience and more open experience.”

Margenau seems to be hinting at a much more open environment in the game that contrasts the dense, claustrophobic urban setting seen in the trailer.

In the interview, Escayg also explained the evolution of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, saying it began as simple downloadable content and grew into something bigger.

It started as DLC, but we couldn’t find… well, we needed a longer time for the story to develop, and now I would say it’s a story expansion. That’s how we’re terming it.

Nathan Drake’s brother Sam is rumored to be getting his own story through DLC, according to a Sony insider, and there is still plenty of non-story DLC coming as well. Uncharted 4 saw immense success in its first year, so fans should expect more downloadable content in the future.

Naughty Dog is clearly making efforts to mix things up with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy to make the experience feel fresh, broadening its scope in ways that aren’t exactly clear just yet. Additionally, a change in tone could offer a different take on the series — especially if it embraces the more serious approach seen in the trailer. What will make this Uncharted experience truly unique, however, is its two female leads and the intriguing dynamic between them.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy will launch some time in 2017 for PlayStation 4.
