Call of Cthulhu: Depths of Madness Trailer

Focus Home Interactive releases the new Depths of Madness trailer for Call of Cthulhu, giving gamers a glimpse of the mind-bending terrors that await in the game.

Although H.P. Lovecraft was not an overly-appreciated writer in his time, his works have since gone on to become iconic works of horror, influencing a wide variety of other projects and causing a number of spin-offs in their own right. This includes the realm of video games, where a new game based on Lovecraft’s work, Call of Cthulhu, received a debut trailer at E3 2016. Now, horror fans can see another glimpse at this game in action, courtesy of a new trailer.

This trailer, which has been released by publisher Focus Home Interactive, showcases just a few of the scenes that gamers can expect from the finished Call of Cthulhu game. With various snippets of dialogue, and brief snapshots of many locations and characters, it’s clear that developer Cyanide Studio is trying to ensure that the dread of the original story follows through into the game itself.

For those familiar with the story, or with the work of Lovecraft in general, there is plenty there to get the heart racing. From scenes of madness through to grim settings, and with just a tiny look at what could be some cosmic horror along the way, there’s certainly potential here for Call of Cthulhu to bring some deep, dark horror back to the surface. Those interested in seeing the full trailer can do so in the video embed below – but watch out for the scares.

Lovecraft’s work has already seen video game adaptations, and 2005’s Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth stands as a good example of exactly how well a Lovecraftian tale can work within the video game medium. Although the game was not a particularly big success when it came to sales, the title has become a cult hit with horror fans, earning a rightful place in the library of many gamers after a chill.

Of course, given how influential Lovecraft has become to the horror genre in general, there have been many examples of Lovecraftian horrors in action within video games. Those who enjoyed Bloodborne, for instance, will be more than familiar with the cosmic horrors that fill the horror writer’s pages, while Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem also followed a similar path to Lovecraft when it came to the overall narrative. That’s without even mentioning the likes of Amnesia.

Whether Call of Cthulhu itself will continue the trend of Lovecraftian horror success stories is as yet unknown, but the title certainly has enough potential from a storytelling point of view to really make a dent in the video game world. Here’s hoping that the development of the game matches what it could accomplish.

Call of Cthulhu will be released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
