Some fans are disappointed that the upcoming Resident Evil VII is such a departure from series norms. It features a first-person viewpoint, a main character that lacks combat prowess, and while datamining seems to suggest at least one returning character, it appears to have little ties to other games in the franchise. Luckily for those looking to revisit classic characters and themes, Capcom is releasing a new CG Resident Evil film on May 27th, 2017 in Japan called Resident Evil: Vendetta, and an exciting English-language trailer is now available to whet fans’ appetites.
Unlike the film’s first trailer, the second trailer for Resident Evil: Vendetta gives fans a good idea of what to expect from the movie. Resident Evil: Vendetta will be set after the events of Resident Evil 6, with a new antagonist named Glenn Arias that is being pursued by Chris Redfield and his squad. Unfortunately for Redfield, Arias has his own crew at his disposal, all of which seem to be equipped with devastating supernatural powers.
As seen in the trailer, Redfield and his team are defeated by Arias in a creepy mansion that resembles the Spencer Estate from the original game. Following this defeat, Redfield enlists the help of other classic characters, with former S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and globe-trotting US secret agent Leon S. Kennedy joining his struggle against Arias.
The trailer indicates that Resident Evil: Vendetta will feature a number of high octane action sequences, including a scene where zombie dogs chase Leon down a highway as he flees on a motorcycle. Along with the vicious zombie dogs, a number of other recognizable Resident Evil baddies are accounted for in the trailer, most notably the slow-moving zombies that defined the early entries in the franchise.
Based on the trailer, it’s clear that Resident Evil: Vendetta will be a canon entry in the franchise like the two CG films that preceded it, but what remains to be seen is if the movie will help bridge the gap between Resident Evil 6 and VII. Past Resident Evil CG films served such a purpose, with the end of Resident Evil: Degeneration leading directly into the events of Resident Evil 5. However, Resident Evil VII stars new protagonist Ethan Winters instead of Chris Redfield or Leon S. Kennedy, and seems to have very little story connections to other games in the series.
We already know Leon won’t be in Resident Evil VII, so chances seem slim that Resident Evil: Vendetta will fill in the gap between Resident Evil 6 and the new game. Even so, the film should give fans of the original Resident Evil cast something to look forward to next year.
Resident Evil: Vendetta will release in Japan on May 27th, 2017.
