Hideo Kojima Reveals His Most Anticipated Game of 2017

Hideo Kojima shares his thoughts about the new year, revealing his most anticipated game of 2017, as well as which movie he’s looking forward to the most.

With the frustration of his Konami departure behind him, Death Stranding developer Hideo Kojima can now look to the future. As it stands, Kojima’s future is looking bright, with development ramping up on Death Stranding at the new Kojima Productions, and plenty of new video games to look forward to as well, with one he is especially excited to play.

In an interview with GI.biz, Kojima said his most anticipated video game in 2017 is the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2. While Kojima didn’t elaborate on why he’s excited for Red Dead Redemption 2, fans shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the open world western is the game he is looking forward to the most in 2017. After all, Kojima has publicly praised the works of Rockstar Games in the past, going as far as to say that Grand Theft Auto 5 looked so good that it made him depressed when comparing it to his own work.

Kojima seems to be interested in open world games in general right now, as he decided to make Metal Gear Solid 5 open world, even though the previous titles were linear stealth games. Death Stranding will also be open world, and so perhaps Kojima is anticipating Red Dead Redemption 2 so that he can get some inspiration for his new game.

Besides video games, Kojima will find inspiration for Death Stranding by watching movies, which have had a huge influence on his past games. Since he is a film buff, there are likely many movies Kojima is excited to see in 2017, but the upcoming sci-fi thriller Blade Runner 2049 tops his list. Both Blade Runner and Death Stranding use heavy sci-fi themes and symbolic imagery, so it’s possible that the new Blade Runner will also inspire him while working on Death Stranding.

Perhaps Kojima will even spring to sign one of the stars of Blade Runner 2049 to make an appearance in Death Stranding. So far the game is filled with celebrities, with The Walking Dead‘s Norman Reedus starring as the main protagonist, Mads Mikkelsen appearing as the villain, and Guillermo del Toro playing a character that we still know very little about. Who’s to say Blade Runner 2049‘s Ryan Gosling or Harrison Ford can’t join the star-studded cast?

Of course, adding more celebrities to the cast could make Death Stranding‘s budget rather bloated, so Kojima may just stick with the three stars he’s already signed for the game. With development expected to ramp up on Death Stranding significantly in 2017, fans should get more definitive answers about the game’s cast and characters at some point next year.

Death Stranding is in development for PS4.
