Players who are tired of all the Death Blossom or RIP-Tire ultimate abilities hogging the glory in Overwatch‘s Play of the Game feature are in luck, as Blizzard announces that it is looking to change up the formula in favor of a more team-based format.
Talking to Kotaku at BlizzCon 2016, lead hero designer Geoff Goodman mentioned that a revamp to the feature is on its way, as Blizzard want to ensure that more heroes get credit for impressive plays in Overwatch.
“There’s a plan to do what we’re calling Play of the Game 2.0,” Goodman commented. “It’s been on the books for a little while. It’s just a matter of prioritizing everything. We have a lot of really cool ideas.”
The ideas in question involve using some impressive camera work to show off teamwork in-game. For example, when Zarya and Genji combine their ultimate attacks to wipe out the enemy team, Play of the Game 2.0 will aim to give both members of the team equal credit, rather than just giving the offense hero all the glory.
Another idea that Goodman mentioned specifically would see Mercy players getting a lot more credit during the highlight clip. The Play of the Game 2.0 clip could show the healer performing an important Resurrect ultimate before changing to other characters as they bring in the eliminations.
At present, characters such as Reaper and McCree get a lot of Play of the Games due to the powerful nature of their ultimate abilities, but the kills often come about due to a second character such as Zarya or Mei holding the enemies in place. Changing the format for good could lead to many support characters, such as the newly-revealed Sombra, getting their time in the spotlight.
In other recent Overwatch news, straight from BlizzCon, director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed that the single-character limit will be coming to the team shooter’s Quick Play mode. Any players who want to play games with multiple versions of the same hero allowed will have to play the title’s upcoming Arcade mode which will be coming to the Public Test Realm alongside Sombra, sometime next week.
It’s an exciting time to be an Overwatch fan, and the range of new content that Blizzard is adding to the game is sure to keep the shooter feeling fresh for a long time to come.
Overwatch is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
