The Order: 1886 IP Has 'A Future'

Creative director for The Order: 1886 claims developer Ready at Dawn has plans for the future of the IP, and wants to continue the game’s larger story.

Last year’s The Order: 1886 was one of the most hyped and anticipated titles of the year, but unfortunately fell flat at launch and has all but disappeared from memory. Yet that doesn’t seem to be keeping the game’s developer from moving forward with the IP.

According to The Order: 1886’s creative director, Ru Weerasuriya, the developer has something in mind for the future of the IP, though there’s not much known yet about what that future could hold. In fact, in a recent interview, Weerasuriva claimed the company was thinking about extending the IP into an ongoing franchise from the very start of The Order: 1886’s development. Weerasuriva said:

Is there a future? Yes. That IP has a future. It’s definitely built in that IP. That future is already something that was built from the very get go, from the first day we started working on it. As you know, since you played the game and for the ones who played out there… there is a larger storyline. There is a macro story that keeps going, it’s an IP that is actually bigger than the storylines that we have created. So there are legs to this IP, definitely.

The Order Takes 5 Hours to Beat

That larger storyline is something many gamers were hoping from the first time around, and are still interested in seeing. That said, developer Ready at Dawn made a lot of mistakes with The Order: 1886, and would need to produce a high-quality, long-running sequel to get gamers back into the IP.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Weerasuriva has shared this point of view. Way back in May 2015, just a few months after The Order: 1886 was first released, Weerasuriva claimed the game was never meant to be a one-off story. That said, the game received mediocre reviews, which had many gamers and industry experts wondering if Ready at Dawn would have the capital and support to continue with the IP.

Obviously, Weerasuriva and the rest of his team don’t seem to worried about the rough launch of The Order: 1886. If the crew at Ready at Dawn can learn from their mistakes, there’s still a lot of potential to be had with The Order: 1886’s world. In fact, those who played the game to its conclusion are aware that it left things open for a continuation of the story.

The Order 1886 Fire

As far as when gamers could expect a sequel or progression of The Order: 1886, Weerasuriva didn’t offer any insight. Ready at Dawn is currently working on at least two projects, DeFormers for PC and consoles, and Lone Echo for Oculus Rift, so there’s no telling how long it will be before gamers see the next installment in The Order: 1886 universe.

What do you think about Weerasuriva’s comments about the future of The Order: 1886? Would you like to see the developer create a sequel?

The Order: 1886 is currently available on PlayStation 4.
