It’s possible there are more important elements to discuss regarding Final Fantasy 15 in the next two months leading up to the game’s release, but the confirmation of Moogles in Final Fantasy 15 is right up there with gameplay design and juicy story spoilers. It was only 11 months ago when fans of the series rallied behind the dimunitive, cat-like cherub that is the Moogle and cried out for its inclusion in Final Fantasy 15, and the movement was so strong that game director Hajime Tabata had no choice but to acquiesce.
While fans could now sleep easy knowing that the noble Moogle would make an appearance once more within the many realms of the Final Fantasy series, what they didn’t know was just what their role would be. A Square Enix Final Fantasy 15 countdown that appeared yesterday, however, strongly hinted that gamers would soon become aware of what Moogles were up to in-game. Late yesterday night, that information was finally revealed – the Moogle will be a “lucky item” and will appear as a doll in Final Fantasy 15.
Nobody expected the Moogles to be at the center of a sinister conspiracy in Final Fantasy 15, but it’s safe to say that fans might have anticipated the entire species’ role within the game to be bigger than that of a glorified teddy bear. Square Enix hinted that the doll would do more than just sit around and look adorable, however, making a cryptic but exciting suggestion to gamers:
“Take Moogle dolls and goods as your lucky charm to help avoid all kinds of troubles. Maybe Moogle will help out when Noctis and his friends are in a tight spot!”
Perhaps the Moogle doll will be more like the living one’s Lulu so famously employed over the course of Final Fantasy 10. Square Enix also launched a promotion called Moogle Collection to accompany the publisher’s announcement, functioning as a reward program that will give users Moogle rewards once the English and Japanese Final Fantasy 15 Twitter accounts hit certain milestones. These rewards have yet to be revealed, but the website layout indicates there will be eight of them – seven mystery ones and a “Moogle Movie”.
The new design and function of Moogles in Final Fantasy 15 might be jarring and unexpected, but they fit in with the direction the game seems to be taking. A revamped gameplay system alongside new roles for series favorites is a recipe that could make Final Fantasy 15 one of the most popular in the series, and the new Moogle design could become one of Final Fantasy 15 art director Yusuke Naora’s last great contributions to the franchise.
Final Fantasy 15 will launch worldwide on November 29, 2016 for PS4 and Xbox One.
