Fans waiting for Beyond Good & Evil 2 have been on the kind of journey that very few gamers can fathom. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been delayed and then outright ignored for such long periods of time that it’s a small wonder news about the title even excites fans anymore, but it does – Beyond Good & Evil 2‘s development status is still huge news. That being said, however, in recent years the only thing that’s been confirmed is that series creator Michel Ancel is still working on Beyond Good & Evil 2, with very little to show for the seven-plus years the game has been in development.
Light has finally begun to seep through the shadows of Beyond Good & Evil 2‘s obscured development in recent months, though. At first, it was simply Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirming Beyond Good & Evil 2 was still coming, whenever that might be. The next step for Ubisoft and series creator Michel Ancel has been for the creator himself to begin showcasing some teaser images, including ones the developer leaked earlier today that showcase a familiar species from the first game.
Endangered species - now saved - Game in pre-production - Stay tuned !
The picture clearly seems to display a member of the Mammago family, the rhino-inspired species from the original Beyond Good & Evil game. That picture is also accompanied by a caption that states the game the character is involved in is in pre-production – the strongest indicator yet that Beyond Good & Evil 2‘s development is finally going somewhere nearly a decade later.
Whatever Ancel is teasing also has the blessing of Ubisoft, as the publisher’s Twitter account tweeted earlier this week that fans should watch Ancel’s Instagram profile over the coming week. An Ubisoft spokesperson confirmed to Polygon that the artwork posted by Ancel is related to the game he is working on for Ubisoft – an important distinction, given that Ancel currently splits time between his Ubisoft projects and his work on Wild for Wild Sheep Studio.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 has to be one of the few games, alongside other years-long projects Final Fantasy 15 and The Last Guardian, that has managed to enrapture a playerbase so thoroughly that it is still as ravenous for a finished product as it was in 2008. While Ancel’s teasers are hardly a substantial sampling of what Beyond Good & Evil 2 will look like, the fact that it’s anything – anything at all – is likely enough to spark the next wave of hype for a game that will have a lot to live up to if and when it finally launches.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is currently in pre-production, and is believed to be in development for the PS4 and Xbox One.
