As the 2016 calendar flips ever so closer to the end of the line, Yooka-Laylee is creeping ever so closer to its Q1 2017 release schedule. The spiritual successor to Banjoo Kazooie had smashed its Kickstarter goals over a year ago, and fans have been eagerly waiting for the release of the previously digital-only title. Today, developer Playtonic Games has announced that Yooka-Laylee will also be getting a physical release, although the full details on that haven’t been sorted out yet.
Many fans had requested that a physical form of the game be made available to consumers, but until today Playtonic Games had remained mum on the issue. The studio hadn’t ever issued an outright no, so the possibility was always on the cards – though not many Kickstarter games have succeeded to the point where physical discs are an option. Then again, not many games break so many fundraising records, either.
Here’s what Playtonic Games had to say about the physical release of Yooka-Laylee:
“We’re delighted to be able to offer Yooka-Laylee in both digital and boxed flavours in time for the game’s launch in Q1 2017. As we speak, our business badgers are busily burrowing away on an initiative that will allow Kickstarter backers to upgrade their digital pledge to a physical version if they choose to do so.”
Playtonic Games went on to state that the studio wasn’t ready for more particular details about the physical version yet, but we’re sure many gamers will be happy to have a physical manifestation of the game as opposed to going the strictly digital route. It’ll be interesting to see if physical versions of Yooka-Laylee will truly be available for each platform, or if they’ll just cover the bulk of sales with Xbox One, PS4, and PC discs while neglecting the Wii U, Mac, and Linux minority.
The studio recently released a brand new trailer for the game that features a cameo from Shovel Knight, along with some of main cast members like head villain Capital B (yes, he’s a bee). We heralded the title as one of the best indie games at E3 2016, though there’s little doubt that fans of Banjoo-Kazooie will have very high expectations for the spiritual successor. In any event, we’re excited about the arrival of another 3D platformer.
Yooka-Laylee will release early in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, Mac, and Linux.
