The Witcher 3 Not Getting 4K Patch on PS4 Pro

CD Projekt Red states that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will not receive a patch to support 4K resolution or other upgrades when played on a PlayStation 4 Pro.

Since its reveal, Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro has been somewhat controversial. Fans were expecting a significant upgrade that would play games in native 4K resolution, only for it to be discovered that many titles will be upscaled instead. Furthermore, the fact that not all games will take advantage of PS4 Pro’s enhanced capabilities has also been a source of disdain for some, and now The Witcher III: Wild Hunt can be added to the list of games that will be skipping PS4 Pro support.

CD Projekt Red acknowledged that, while it would be possible to release a 4K resolution patch for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt on PS4 Pro, it would ultimately be a drain on resources. Instead of focusing on a finished game that has consumed the studio’s time for years now, it would rather work on new projects, like the ambitious Cyberpunk 2077 and the Witcher spinoff digital card game, Gwent.

Those that would like to experience Geralt’s latest adventure in 4K resolution aren’t completely out of luck, however. The game actually does support 4K when played on PC, so fans will have to decide if 4K graphics are worth the price of a powerful, modern gaming rig and a 4K monitor.

CD Projekt Red isn’t the only studio that has decided to opt out of retroactively making its games PS4 Pro compatible. Bungie, for example, is another major studio that will not be making its already-released products enhanced on PS4 Pro, meaning those hoping for a 4K resolution Destiny will have to wait for the sequel.

Even though major games like The Witcher III and Destiny won’t support 4K resolution on PS4 Pro, there are many other games that are getting patched to do just that. For instance, both Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will support PS4 Pro upgrades, as will other big name releases like The Witness, Final Fantasy XV, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and more.

Hopefully these PS4 Pro compatible games will be enough to make up for the lack of 4K resolution when playing The Witcher III: Wild Hunt on the new console. And if Witcher III fans are still disappointed, hopefully they remember that by focusing its attention on new projects, CD Projekt Red could potentially deliver the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 and the standalone Gwent game at a much faster pace.

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
