Whenever someone blames a poor multiplayer performance on the game itself, rarely is it ever actually the game’s fault. However, every once in awhile, gamers have a legitimate grievance about a defective feature in a game, and so is the case with Overwatch‘s wonky aim assist on console. Players have come together to collect evidence proving the existence of an aim assist bug in the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Blizzard’s popular shooter, and now the studio itself has acknowledged the problem, promising a fix is on the way.
The bug in question affects how the aim assist system in Overwatch reacts to verticality. For example, if a player is aiming at an enemy, and that enemy jumps, the cursor will go down instead of staying steady.
After seeing numerous GIFs and videos of this issue posted online by concerned Overwatch fans, lead designer Tim Ford announced that Blizzard has identified what is causing it, and will be fixing the aim assist problem in the game’s next console patch. When that patch will be available exactly remains to be seen, but it’s probable it will be a part of the large update coming to the game in September.
So far, the next Overwatch patch is shaping up to be one of the biggest since the game’s launch. Not only will it fix this issue with the game’s aim assist, but it is also expected to kick off the second season of Competitive Play. On top of that, the patch will continue to balance the game by making tweaks to various characters, and will also squash other lingering bugs as well.
If all that weren’t enough, the next major update for Overwatch will likely include the new Eichenwalde map. The first of hopefully many free DLC maps, Eichenwalde has players battling it out in a European village, as well as a large, sprawling castle. Players are excited for Eichenwalde not just for the opportunity to play on a new map, but also for the chance to hunt for more clues about Sombra, who is said to be Overwatch‘s second DLC character.
It’s clear that Blizzard has big plans for Overwatch with the next update, and hopefully it will help keep dedicated players engaged with the game. Overwatch is meant to be a constantly evolving experience, so expect many more fixes and substantial content updates in the future.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
