One of the biggest surprises of E3 2015 was the announcement of South Park: The Fractured But Whole, especially since series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone swore off video game development after launching its predecessor. This year’s E3 gave fans an extended look at the game, including a cinematic trailer that helps to set up its story.
In South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the New Kid is no longer cool, as the kids of South Park have stopped playing medieval fantasy and have started playing superheroes. Cartman devises a scheme for the kids to make money off their superhero personas by creating a cinematic universe akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but disagreements about how this is set up causes the superheroes to split into two distinct teams. The resulting conflict mirrors not only the warring factions highlighted in The Stick of Truth, but also parodies the events of Captain America: Civil War.
For the most part, the rest of The Fractured But Whole‘s story is being kept under wraps. However, the end of the story trailer features the appearance of one of the latest season’s more popular characters, PC Principal. It appears as though PC Principal will be aligned with Cartman’s superhero faction in the game, but he could also just be one of the game’s summons.
In the meantime, the cinematic story trailer for South Park: The Fractured But Whole was prefaced with the announcement of the game’s release date. According to Ubisoft, South Park: The Fractured But Whole will be available on December 6th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. However, looking at The Stick of Truth‘s long history of delays, and the laughter of Trey Parker when the release date was announced, fans may want to hold off on rushing out to pre-order the game just yet.
Those that pre-order The Fractured But Whole, by the way, will receive a free copy of South Park: The Stick of Truth for either PC, PS4, or Xbox One. This helps to sweeten the pot a bit, but again, there’s no guarantee that The Fractured But Whole will meet its December 6th deadline, if the track record of the first game is anything to go by.
South Park: The Stick of Truth earned positive reviews when it released a couple years back, so the wait for The Fractured But Whole will probably be worth it, even if it does end up delayed. Hopefully The Fractured But Whole meets its planned December release date without any delays, so fans don’t have to wait too long to test its more tactical combat for themselves.
