In an attempt to lure some hardcore gamers to the Wii U, Nintendo financed Bayonetta 2, a game that, despite the strong reviews of its predecessor, had been canned by Sega. Without Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 simply would not have existed, and now the Big N appears to be doing something similar with the long in-development Beyond Good & Evil 2.
According to the latest rumors, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is being financed by Nintendo, and will serve as a Nintendo NX exclusive game in 2017. Furthermore, the game will be released under the title Beyond Good & Evil: The Prejudices of Philosophers – a reference to a chapter from the Beyond Good & Evil text by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Typically, we would write this information off as nonsense unless Nintendo or Ubisoft made an official announcement, but there is already some legitimacy to the source providing the info. The source that has leaked Beyond Good & Evil 2 being developed as a Nintendo NX exclusive is the same source that revealed Pokemon Sun and Moon before those games were officially announced last week, making these Beyond Good & Evil 2 rumors much more believable.
This is also the same source that recently claimed the Nintendo NX will launch in 2016 with Zelda as a launch title. If the source is to be believed, then it looks like the Nintendo NX is going to have a strong start in terms of exclusive games. Of course, we can’t be certain if any of this is completely true until Nintendo confirms or denies the rumors.
Hopefully there is some truth to the rumors, as fans of Beyond Good & Evil have been waiting to see what happens next in the story since the original released in 2003. Due to the poor sales of the first game, however, the sequel has been stuck in development hell since its initial announcement. With the added financial backing of Nintendo, perhaps Beyond Good & Evil 2 will finally see the light of day.
In the meantime, if we assume that these rumors are indeed true, this could offer a better idea of the hardware capabilities of the Nintendo NX. Previously, it was claimed by Ubisoft that Beyond Good & Evil 2 would only be possible on new-gen consoles, referring to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If Nintendo is truly aiming to have the game release as a Nintendo NX exclusive next year, then it is safe to say that the NX will sport hardware that is on par, if not superior, than what is available on PS4 and Xbox One.
In any case, even though these rumors have more legitimacy to them than other rumors out in the wild, it’s still important for fans to keep expectations in check. Until Nintendo or Ubisoft make an announcement, those hoping for Beyond Good & Evil 2 should take this latest development with a grain of salt.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is currently in development for unspecified platforms.
