Remember all the confusion last year about Rise of the Tomb Raider being an Xbox “timed-exclusive”? Well, all that hoopla was settled earlier this month when Square Enix announced January 28th (that’s tomorrow) as the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC.
The game will be up on Steam come Thursday this week for the standard $59.99 price tag. If you want in on the PC version but think a 3 month delay entitles you to some sort of discount… well that’s actually happening right now at various retailers.
Just yesterday, UK-based digital retailer GMG launched a new 27% off discount on the Steam copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider dropping the price to $44.99. Competing with GMG, DLGamer has a discount at 30% but does not include any pre-order bonus offers. Read on below to see the differences if you’re interested in the game.
As mentioned, a few other reputable retailers also have good deals on Rise of the Tomb Raider. Interestingly, GamesPlanet, which is as legitimate of a retailer as they come, makes no mention of pre-order bonus for their copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider. While we initially thought this was some sort of accidentally omission, it seems Steam Store and GMG have both secured the pre-order bonus exclusivity for the PC release.
Until release date at about 10AM Pacific, if you pre-order Rise of Tomb Raider from either GMG or Steam Store, you’ll receive a free copy of 2013’s Tomb Raider. Assuming you already have a copy of the game (which is likely at this point), you can easily gift the Steam key to a friend.
Also included as a pre-order bonus are two DLC packs, the “Remnant Resistance Pack” and a “Sparrow Hawk Pack.”
The Remnant Resistance Pack includes a few in-game bonuses you might find intriguing. In the pack you get a “Remnant” outfit for Lara which gives her a chance to bandage without using any resources. There’s also a “Moon Shadow” Heavy Pistol Skin, Bullet Resistance foil card, and for you Romophiles some ancient Byzantine armor for Lara to wear.
For the “Sparrowhawk Pack” you get an additional outfit that boots Lara’s hunting ability, a bow skin, and a rare foil card that gives you 2x damage and resource collection from animals.
If you’re a big Tomb Raider fan and you’re planning to buy the upcoming Season Pass, you might want to take a look at the Digital Deluxe, which also nets the same 27% discount from GMG.
Details of the Season Pass were revealed as early as four months ago, which you can read about here. While three large expansion sounds great on paper and the game has sold relatively well as an Xbox One exclusive (over a million copy) – if you’re on the fence about the game we recommend waiting for reviews and port reports before you take the plunge.
