GR Pick: Overwatch and GoldenEye 64 Mashup Video

A fan creates a video mashing up Blizzard’s mega popular shooter, Overwatch, with the Nintendo 64 classic, GoldenEye with awesome and hilarious results.

There’s no question that Overwatch is one of the most popular and highly acclaimed games and first person shooters out right now. It scooped up a majority of 2016’s Game of the Year awards, was extremely profitable, and its developer Blizzard continues to debut new content and live events for the game to satiate its fanbase. In addition, it is carving its own niche into the eSports world.

And as is the case with many popular games, its fans become a highly creative bunch putting together awesome content. That is the case with Overwatch, as YouTuber Noilleber has created a video mashing together the adored hero shooter with another fan-favorite shooter from the past, GoldenEye.

The video uses gameplay from Overwatch, but sets it up in the classic GoldenEye 4-player split screen style. In addition to the split-screen setup, music and sound effects from GoldenEye are used including weapon effects, the screams upon death, and the victorious 007 flair for the player who gets a kill. Plus, GoldenEye‘s health bar and bloody screen wipe visuals are put over the images as well. The shooting also mimics the auto-aim shooting that was used in the single-joystick Nintendo 64 shooter.

One other nod, which will likely be understood by those who played GoldenEye on Nintendo 64, revolves around Torbjorn. He stands in for Oddjob, who was a character that was shorter than the others. When players selected him, they were able to crouch and get close to another player, disappearing from view while still being able to shoot enemies.

All these elements results a nostalgic trip down memory lane for any gamer who is old enough to remember playing local multiplayer GoldenEye with friends 20 years ago (yes, GoldenEye came out in 1997).

While the video is a trick of game capture and video editing, it definitely brings up ideas of the possibility of creating GoldenEye-inspired custom games like a “Golden Gun” mode. Doing so should be easier than ever for fans soon, as Blizzard will be adding highly versatile custom games tools to Overwatch in the near future.

But while fans know custom games and a server browser are coming, Blizzard has yet to provide a further road map for Overwatch‘s next live event. Year of the Rooster recently ended, but there was not a Valentine’s Day event nor will there be one for Easter, according to Blizzard. But no matter when new content drops for Overwatch, fans can always count on videos like this to keep each other engaged and entertained with the game.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
