As one of the most successful multiplayer first-person shooter titles released in recent years, and as the winner of the prestigious Game of the Year Award at the 2016 Game Awards, Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch has a legion of dedicated fans and is almost always making headlines. Today is no exception.
Coming off the heels of the Winter Wonderland event and the recent nerf updates to a few of the game’s heroes, Overwatch has yet again broke news – this time for a reason many fans are enthused about. Reddit user akhanubis posted to an Overwatch subreddit thread three Valentine’s Day voice lines. Datamined from the game’s public test realm, these lines are from Overwatch‘s upcoming update, and feature three beloved heroes: the blonde-haired Swiss healer Mercy, the star-throwing cyborg Genji, and the sharp shooter Hanzo, Genji’s brother.
The first voice line focuses on a conversation between Genji and Hanzo, in which Genji asks his brother if he has any chocolates. “Those were your amusements, not mine,” Hanzo responds. In the next, Mercy (whose real name is Angela) offers Genji chocolates of his own. “Swiss – they’re the best,” Mercy says before Genji suggests they share them. The mini story wraps up with Genji gifting Mercy chocolates, too. Though she’s slightly disappointed they are not Swiss, she thanks him kindly.
Upon hearing these Valentine’s Day voice lines, Overwatch fans went wild. Many are ecstatic, convinced that the lines confirm the possibility that Mercy and Genji are a couple. This type of reaction is common in the Overwatch community, as countless players have often questioned whether certain relationships could be canon in-game, some even hoping for these pairings to be revealed and confirmed by Blizzard.
The Mercy/Genji pairing hinted at in these Valentine’s Day voice lines has been a hot topic among Overwatch ultra-fans. Given the heroes’ backstory, in which Mercy nurses Genji to health after a particularly intense physical transformation, many have been committed to the pair for quite some time. Such fans were given more to get excited over when the recently released Overwatch holiday comic implied that Genji and Mercy were sending each other letters.
Considering the popularity of the Blizzard title – it was the most profitable PC game of 2016 – and how dedicated its fans are, the overwhelming response to this discovery comes as little shock. On the other hand, some Overwatch players are not focused on the possible pairings, but rather are focused on how the datamined voice lines connect to Blizzard Vice President Jeff Kaplan’s previous announcement that there would not be a Valentine’s Day-themed event. Perhaps these voice lines tie in to a Valentine’s Day Overwatch comic, or maybe there are additional voice lines to be uncovered. There could be a surprise in the works.
Overwatch was released on May 23, 2016, and is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
