The MMORPG genre might be forever doomed to live under the shadow of the continuous success of World of Warcraft, but Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 is gradually making a compelling case as the first true competitor to World of Warcraft in nearly a decade. The development team managed to turn one of the worst major launches in the history of the genre into a rebooted and enjoyable online-roleplaying experience, and Final Fantasy 14 has only gotten better with time.
Now that Final Fantasy 14 is gearing up for the launch of its much-anticipated Stormblood expansion, the next few patches released for the game in the meantime will likely become the ones that players remember most clearly as Heavensward, the current expansion, comes to a close. Square Enix hasn’t slowed down before the next major expansion, however, as a recently released trailer for Patch 3.5: The Far Edge of Fate shows that Heavensward still has a lot of content to provide before it’s gone.
The nearly ten-minute long trailer from Square Enix focuses on the multitude of additions that Patch 3.5 will add to Final Fantasy 14‘s main game. These upgrades range from a preview of what looks to be the next entry in the Warring Triad series of boss fights, insights into new Beast Tribe Quests, and new gear – including the iconic costume of Final Fantasy 8‘s Squall, modelled by races both big and small. Patch 3.5 will also mark one of the last content additions for PS3 players, as support for PS3 users will end in Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood.
Patch 3.5 will also feature the addition of a brand new Feast map as well as two new dungeons, Baelsar’s Wall – which players can scale toward the Garlean Empire in-game – and Sohm Al (Hard), a more difficult edition of a pre-existing dungeon. The trailer also ends with a very small glimpse of what Patch 3.5’s main scenario will look like, and it appears that something cataclysmic could be coming to Final Fantasy 14 quite soon.
All told, the new Final Fantasy 14 trailer exhibits the kind of exhilarating information dump that Blizzard has become so effective at condensing into World of Warcraft trailers, and Square Enix also appears to be developing the same sort of cinematic touch that has long made Blizzard trailers some of the most exciting in gaming. Those captivated by the trailer won’t have to wait much longer for Patch 3.5, either – it releases in just a few short weeks worldwide.
Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PS4, PS3, and PC. Patch 3.5: The Far Edge of Fate will release on January 17, 2017.
