When it comes to the most anticipated games of 2017, Destiny 2 certainly needs to be near the top of the list. Although some gamers did feel disappointed by the original Destiny, the title was still a huge success, with a strong community that remains solid to this day. One of the main criticisms of the first game, however, was its story, and it looks as though Bungie may be set to address this ready for the release of Destiny 2.
As it turns out, Bungie has recently announced a number of job positions on its website, some with a very specific focus on the game’s narrative. These roles include hirings for Head of Narrative Development, Narrative Director, and Live Narrative Director, with the job description of the latter two directly focusing on creating narratives in the Destiny universe.
Perhaps the most eye-catching of the three, however, is that of the Live Narrative Director. The job listing states that the successful candidate “will direct the storytelling efforts for regular, small-scale Destiny releases throughout the calendar year,” which could suggest that potential smaller free updates for Destiny 2 could have more of a narrative focus than the first game, instead of just the main game and subsequent paid-for expansions.
This would certainly be seen as a boon for fans of the Destiny universe, as the lack of embedded narrative content has become something of a bugbear for players. Although there is a rich lore outside of the gameplay itself, and compelling content outside of Destiny proper through the use of ARGs, some have felt that things have been left a little bare when it come to the actual main title.
What’s surprising, though, is that these hirings have appeared with the game scheduled for a release in 2017. According to Activision, the 2017 release date is still right on track, so it will be interesting to see how much influence these new roles will have over the game’s narrative as a whole, or whether they will then be required to work around a story structure that is already in place.
Nonetheless, it seems as though Bungie, and the Destiny franchise, is in the middle of a real expansion of its own. Over the last few months a number of high-profile hirings have been made by the developer, such as the return of designer Josh Hamrick and the arrival of Dragon Age: Inquisition lead producer Cameron Lee from BioWare. With Skylanders developer Vicarious Visions also on board to assist with development, there are plenty of eyes on Destiny 2 right now.
Destiny 2 is currently set to launch in 2017.
