While 2016 represented another great year for Destiny after launching a major free update in April along with a full expansion a couple months ago, its the promise of things to come in 2017 that has fans excited. There’s always more to do in Destiny and Bungie appears poised to not only launch new events but a full fledged sequel as well. To tease fans before the new year arrives, it appears the developer has managed to sneak a new Easter egg into the game for players to discover.
Earlier today, Guardians have begun to discover a new item after opening a newly added free daily gift box known as the box of fortunes. Instead of getting some randomized resource, players receive a paper fortune which is then added to the consumable portion of the inventory. According to the community, the description tied to the fortune is randomized and right now there are at least 26 possible messages.
The descriptions themselves range from the inspirational, to the funny, to the downright bizarre. Here are just a few of the possible descriptions:
Eagle eyed players have also discovered a grimoire card called Dawning Fortunes, though players had no idea how to unlock it until now. Once a paper fortune is acquired during The Dawning event, the card finally unlocks. According to the description, fortune telling is a longstanding tradition that refugees brought to the Last City long ago. As such, Guardians open gift boxes containing these fortunes in the hopes for luck and good news.
Based on that description, a debate has broken out in the community as fans continue to speculate at what these cards mean, if anything. While some agree that this is just a nice little token before the new year arrives, others feel these fortunes hold more value and represent a precursor to some unknown and upcoming event. With Bungie on vacation, it’s likely fans will be waiting for answers for at least another week.
For now, it appears that The Dawning has been a big time success for Activision and Bungie. The developer took some time out of its holiday break to post some interesting statistics from the first seven days of the event including which sparrows have been used the most, how many total strike medals players have earned, and how many total kills guardians have achieved.
