Something that veteran Fallout 4 players are probably all too familiar with is the tendency for companions, especially Dogmeat, to disappear. Trying to find these companions again is sometimes akin to trying to find a needle in a haystack, as they don’t always appear to be where they’re sent off to wait.
It seems as though sometimes companions (and to a lesser extent, settlers) will get stuck on the roofs of buildings in settlements, which could explain where these missing Fallout 4 companions are disappearing to. This occurs most often when a companion is dismissed and sent to one of the game’s settlements. They then spawn on top of a roof, and seem to just sort of hang out there indefinitely.
Players that wish to retrieve these companions have a couple of methods of doing so. Since this most often happens in settlements, players are able to use the settlement building mechanics to create a set of stairs that lead up to the rooftops. At this point, simply approach the companion in question and have them rejoin the party, which should prompt them to follow the player character off the roof. Alternatively, some houses are able to be outright demolished, with their materials salvaged for crafting purposes. Destroying the house a companion is standing on is certainly one way to get them down.
Take, for example, the fully-armored Dogmeat seen in the image above, stuck on a roof in Sanctuary Hills. As stated previously, the player can easily reach Dogmeat by either building stairs or salvaging the house that Dogmeat is standing on to reclaim him.
Hopefully this helps shed some light on where missing companions may be disappearing to in Fallout 4, and how to retrieve them. That being said, there will be times when companions can’t be found in any settlements or on any rooftops. If this is the case, there are two more options players can use to find Dogmeat and other missing companions.
Firstly, build a bell for settlements. Place the bell in the center of town and activate it. Wait a few minutes, and the settlers and companions should all come running. If the missing companion is not in this bunch, then just fast travel around post-apocalyptic Boston a few times, and then try the bell again.
If all else fails, some players have reported that companions can sometimes be found in the place where they were originally befriended. So for example, Dogmeat would be found at the Red Rocket garage, and Nick Valentine would be found in Diamond City. When it comes to lost companions, just don’t lose hope, as they’re definitely still out there somewhere, considering Fallout 4 companions can’t die.
