There is yet to be official word on a holiday-themed Overwatch event. However, delving into the game’s files reveals that new content will be coming as the year undergoes its most festive of seasons.
Blizzard is well-known for releasing special events for its latest first-person shooter, including its recent Halloween Terror update and the Summer Games modes that were held earlier this year. It should therefore come as no surprise that the company is planning on releasing a Christmas-themed update for Overwatch, sometime in the fairly near future. The update is likely to be dropping in early December, but one Reddit user by the name of Venxa has already discovered a range of sound clips, including a festive take on the game’s theme tune, that confirm a future update’s existence.
The sound clips also include a range of new voice-lines between characters that will appear in a future update, though not necessarily the unconfirmed Christmas one. An argument between Tracer and Sombra reveals that the newly-added hacker hero stole the technology for her teleport ability from Overwatch‘s British mascot.
The voice lines may be appearing in an update between now and Christmas, as there are a range of new features currently being tested on the Overwatch Public Test Realm. The next update is likely to bring Symmetra’s redesign into the main game, and new map Oasis may be added in the near future too.
Along with new snowy map changes, we’re likely to see a range of Christmas-themed skins appear with the festive update, though none appear to be in the game files just yet. Personally we’re hoping for a Santa Claus Roadhog skin to rival his Junkenstein’s Monster skin from Halloween, though perhaps it’s time for other heroes to take up the spotlight this event. Since both previous events have come with new game modes, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see a new way to play Overwatch appear in a Christmas update, alongside a present-themed lootbox variation.
In other recent Overwatch news, Hollywood actor Terry Crews has expressed interest in voicing the upcoming hero Doomfist if and when the power-glove wielding character is added to the game’s roster. The actor, who has made several posts about joining the PC gaming world recently, is seen by many to be the perfect fit for such a hero, though nothing much has been revealed about the character besides vague references in-game.
Overwatch is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
