Blizzard’s first-person team shooter Overwatch shows no signs of slowing, after Sombra was just recently added to the cast of heroes and Blizzard established the Overwatch League. But there may be something else brewing for the future of the Overwatch franchise, or potentially a brand new first-person shooter IP being developed at Blizzard.
New job listings show that Blizzard is looking to hire two lead software engineers for an unannounced game or project. What is most interesting is that this unannounced game will be first person:
Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced engine engineer to work on a robust first-person engine for an unannounced project.
Could this be something brand new, or is it more likely that this is a new project in the Overwatch franchise? Considering that before Overwatch, Blizzard was working an MMO codenamed Titan that failed after seven years of development Overwatch was the game that rose from the ashes of the scrapped Titan project.
It’s possible that this project could be a major expansion for Overwatch, potentially as Blizzard looks to move beyond the Origins Edition to a significant expansion or sequel. It’s complete speculation at this point, but many fans may be hoping that this unannounced project could be a campaign or story-based Overwatch game.
The Overwatch universe is rich with character and lore with a deep, talented story team at Blizzard working on the IP. Fans have been asking for some sort of playable story mode of Overwatch for quite some time, but so far the non PvP elements have been online only. The Halloween-themed Junkenstein’s Revenge co-op mode only seemed to strengthen that desire, as well.
For those looking for any supporting evidence of such a project, Blizzard just cancelled the Overwatch graphic novel that was set to tell the story of the Omnic Crisis and how the original Overwatch team was formed. The graphic novel was cancelled because the development team at Blizzard says that the story “changed and expanded” as they continued working on the story, but one the studio “plan[s] to tell.” Could this be a sign that Blizzard is working on some sort of story based addition to the Overwatch universe with a new game?
Take it all with a large grain of salt, as it’s very little to go on at this point. And with Blizzcon just having recently ended, an announcement as big as a new game is probably a long way off.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
