Halo 5: Guardians Still Has Content Updates on the Way

Even though the game has been out for a year, 343 Industries teases that there is still more significant content updates on the way for Halo 5: Guardians.

In today’s gaming landscape, it’s rare to see a title continue to receive regular updates a year after its release, but that is not the case with Halo 5: Guardians. 343 Industries has kept the game updated with new content, with the latest major update, Anvil’s Legacy, releasing for the software just a few weeks ago. While some would have expected 343 to step back from its work on last year’s Halo release and focus on the inevitable next game in the series, it is apparently hard at work on additional new updates for the popular shooter.

According to 343 Industries, “various teams at the studio” are currently working on “different flavors of goodness.” 343 didn’t elaborate on what fans can expect from future Halo 5: Guardians updates, but added that it will be talking about the new content in the near future, and is excited to do so. With the game’s one year anniversary coming up in October, it’s reasonable to assume that there will be some news on the Halo 5 front within the next month.

But the question is, what else can 343 possibly add to the game? Since launch, the studio has already added plenty of new maps, Warzone Firefight, expanded on Forge mode, and more. Halo 5 was a fully-featured game at launch, so it’s hard to imagine what else there is to add to the experience beyond even more new maps and cosmetic items.

While it’s not likely, one feature many fans would like to see added to the game is offline split-screen support. The fact that Halo 5 ditches split-screen has been a source of frustration for fans ever since it was announced, but some have held out hope that the feature would make it to the game eventually. 343 claims that adding split-screen would be non-trivial, but the studio has theoretically had a year to work on it, so maybe split-screen will come to the game after all.

Even if that isn’t the case for future Halo 5: Guardians updates, fans may have to instead hope to see it return for the next installment in the series. 343 has acknowledged the split-screen backlash in the past, and suggested that, due to fan demand for the feature, it could be included in Halo 6 – whenever that releases.

Halo 6 is at least a year or two away from release, if not more, but in the meantime, Halo fans have plenty of content to tide them over on Xbox One. Even if 343’s continued free content updates for Halo 5: Guardians aren’t enough, there’s also the extensive Halo: The Master Chief Collection to consider, as well as a number of Halo spin-offs that are available on the platform.

Halo 5: Guardians is available now for Xbox One.
